Announcing the AWS Sustainability console: Programmatic access, configurable CSV reports, and Scope 1–3 reporting in one place

AWS has launched a dedicated Sustainability console that simplifies how organizations track and report their carbon emissions across all three scope categories. This new standalone service brings together emissions data, reporting tools, and sustainability resources in a centralized location, making it easier for teams to understand their environmental impact without navigating multiple AWS services. The Sustainability console addresses a real gap in cloud operations: previously, accessing comprehensive emissions data often required administrative billing access, which wasn’t practical or secure for dedicated sustainability teams.

What makes this release particularly useful is the shift toward permissioned access. Sustainability and environmental teams can now independently access Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions data without needing full billing account permissions. This separation of duties is important from both a security and operational perspective—your sustainability team can focus on their specific responsibilities without obtaining excessive AWS account privileges. It’s a thoughtful design choice that acknowledges how modern organizations structure their teams.

The technical flexibility should appeal to teams looking to automate their reporting. The console supports programmatic access through APIs and offers configurable CSV export options, which means you can integrate emissions data into your existing monitoring dashboards, Python scripts, or BI tools. Whether you’re building custom analytics, feeding data into a data warehouse, or automating monthly sustainability reports, having structured API access removes the manual work from carbon tracking.

For organizations serious about measuring their cloud carbon footprint, this consolidated view of Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions is a meaningful step forward. It signals that AWS is taking sustainability reporting seriously and giving teams the tools they need to make data-driven environmental decisions. If your organization tracks carbon emissions or faces sustainability reporting requirements, the Sustainability console is worth exploring.
